The arrondissement of Louhans is an arrondissement of France. It is part of the Saône-et-Loire département in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region. Its capital is the city of Louhans.

History

When the Saône-et-Loire was created on 17 February 1800, the arrondissement of Louhans was part of that original department. In 1926, the arrondissement of Louhans was eliminated but in 1942 it became again an arrondissement of the department.[2]

Geography

The arrondissement of Louhans is bordered to the north and east by the Jura department, to the southeast by the Ain (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes) department, to the south by the arrondissement of Mâcon, to the west by the arrondissement of Chalon-sur-Saône and to the northwest (a small part) by the Côte-d'Or department.

It is the easternmost of the arrondissements of the department, with an area of 1,248.5 km2 (482 sq mi),[3] the second smallest in area of the department. It has 55,567 inhabitants, the arrondissement of Saône-et-Loire with fewer people living in it, and a population density of 44.5 inhabitants/km².[4]
