The main game type is defusing a bomb, which is when there are 2 teams which are Counter-Terrorists and Terrorists. The aim of the game is for the terrorist to plant the bomb at bombsite A or bombsite B. The goal is to defuse the bomb or to eliminate the enemy team. It depends on which game mode you are playing to determine on how long a game is. If you are playing casual mode, there are in total 15 rounds, and it will take 8 rounds to win, making a tie impossible. If you are playing competitive, there are in total 30 rounds and it takes 16 rounds wins to win the match. If both teams get 15 rounds, the game is either put into overtime or ended in a draw depending on if you play the game on third-party servers or not.
In other gamemodes, such as arms race, the first person to kill a person with a golden knife (assuming no "collaterals", or killing multiple people with one shot, it will take around 30 or 32 kills to get to the golden knife) would win the entire game.
A successor to the game built on the source 2 engine called Counter-Strike 2 was released on September 27, 2023.[2]
