Luis Carlos Galán Sarmiento (29 September 1943 – 18 August 1989) was a Colombian liberal politician and journalist.
Life
changeLuis Carlos Galán Sarmiento was born in Bucaramanga, Santander, Colombia. He ran for the Presidency of Colombia two times. Galan ran under the Liberal party in 1989 and sought the nomination for the 1990 presidential election.
Death
changeOn August 18, 1989, as Galán walked onto the stage to give a speech in front of ten thousand people during a campaign rally in the town of Soacha, Cundinamarca, some drug cartels of Pablo Escobar shot Galán five times, killing him. He was 45 years old. Ten others were wounded in the gunfire.
