Proposal

change

Simple English Wikipedia incorporates Wikidata infoboxes. This would happen in two phases: an experiment and evaluation, then possibly adoption and hosting the project. The initial objective is designing limited experiments to assess and report how much volunteer labor Wikidata infoboxes require to manage and how much value they provide to readers. If the community at Simple English Wikipedia views these infoboxes favorably, then the community will consider making Simple English Wikipedia a home for organizing Wikidata infoboxes across Wikimedia projects.

Wikidata infoboxes till 2019

change

The Wikimedia community established Wikidata in 2012. Its original description in February 2012 said, "We aim to have the data available for infoboxes by December 2012 / January 2013." By the end of 2019 this data was still not generally available under circumstances which the general Wikimedia community found acceptable to use. While In that time though, the Wikimedia community had done experiments and discussed which features would make the technical functionality more useful.

  1. languages which already use this
    1. Basque and Catalan are most prominent - 90% of articles covered by one infobox
    2. infobox changes content based on instance of statement in Wikidata
  2. French has its own system experimenting with the simpler one
    1. more complex but less developed
    2. they have more than one infobox
  3. Russian has its own system
  4. Welsh uses the Basque / Catalan system?
  • mw:Wikidata Bridge is a proposed tool to edit Wikidata’s data directly from an infobox. In December 2019 it was not functional but in development.
