VidLii

video sharing website designed to resemble early YouTube

VidLii is a video sharing website created by Jan in December 2015 as an alternative to YouTube. The website is designed to resemble the early days of YouTube, with a simple, nostalgic interface that harks back to 2009 and 2010. Since December 2023, it is considered to be a controversial platform, mainly because many users upload gore and pornographic content. [1]

History

Early years

change

The first version was created in 2015 by Jan, under the name "ClipBits." The site was a 2005 version of YouTube, without many features on the main page. In August 2016, the site's look and feel was updated to the 2006 version of YouTube. In late 2016, Jan renamed his website "VidBit," which is the YouTube version from late 2008 and early 2009. The site changed its name to "VidLii" in 2017. For most of the year, it received many updates as a TestLii program to test and experiment with new features. [2] The site was popular until it developed a toxic user base.

Transfer of ownership

change

In May 2019, a website called Vlare was launched. It originally started as a custom theme for VidLii in 2018, but later spun off into its own site. In February 2022, Jan sold VidLii and BitView to Kuz and Lolwut. A few days later, VidLii went down for a short period of time to transfer the servers to new owners. Lolwut announced on the site's blog that Kuz had resigned and left the site. [3] [4]

VidLii has been going downhill since Jan sold VidLii to Kuz and Lolwut. The site has become an extreme niche controversy and contains blood, child pornography, shock and other shocking content. VidLii is also a popular video-sharing website for neo-Nazis due to the lack of moderation and rules prohibiting Nazism on the site.

In November of 2024, Vidlii granted ownership to a user named aniki, who updated the terms of use to remove any Neo-Nazi, gore or extremist content. This change was partially attributed to the stabbing attack in Eskişehir, Turkey. The perpretrator was a VidLii user who uploaded Neo-Nazi, islamophobic and extremist content to his VidLii channel. This extreme ideology was the result of this attack, which prompted the new owner to take action to prevent something like this from happening again. [5] Then the website wasn't working.
