Family values

sociological concept

When people talk about family values, they often mean a traditional family:

  • The father has a job, and provides most of the family income
  • The mother raises the children. Ideally, she does not do any other work.
  • Mother and father are married

This became the most common form of a family, in the United States in the 1960s and 1970s.[1]

Another comomn form is called extended family: Several generations of people who are related, live together: For example, the grandparents live in the same household, and help with raising the children.

People who talk about family values usually see it as bad that people get divorced, or that there are single-parent families.
