19th century

The term Gilded Age refers only to after 1865; perhaps 19th century should be split into pre-Civil War and post-Civil War/Gilded Age sections. Especially since there's some fascinating information about New York/Manhattan's role in enabling slavery. Same with the American Revolution section; most of the 18th century was not encompassed by the American Revolution. Just a thought Purplebackpack89 20:49, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

Overview

Much of this page is written as if

1. Manhattan and Manhattan Island were synonymous, and
2. What is true of Manhattan is true of the city as a whole.

I can hardly say how wrong this is. Of the five boroughs, Manhattan stands out as being the most different. For a start, like the centre of London, it has a huge day-time commuter population which live elsewhere in the boroughs. Then its industries (financial, high-end consumerism and tourism) are also very different. Facts, sources, accuracy! Macdonald-ross (talk) 08:52, 19 December 2014 (UTC)

Manhattan and Manhattan Island are nearly synonymous, except for a small part of Manhattan which is on the mainland (Marble Hill). Kk.urban (talk) 01:55, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
