Tom and Jerry: The Magic Ring

2002 film directed by James Tim Walker

Tom and Jerry: The Magic Ring is a 2001/2002 comedy-fantasy animated direct-to-video movie that stars Tom and Jerry. It is the first direct-to-video and the second animated movie of Tom and Jerry animated movie to only be released only on video and never in a movie theater. Also, it was the final cartoon and the last Tom and Jerry cartoon to be co-executive produced by both, William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, as Hanna died on March 22, 2001, a few days before the movie's release.

Tom and Jerry live in a gloomy mansion with the magician Chip. While Tom, as usual, chases Jerry, in the basement Chip is preparing a magic potion using his enchanted ring. However, he needs the milk of a Calcutta cow: replacing it with normal milk from the supermarket causes the potion to evaporate. Later, Tom ends up in the cellar. Chip orders him to guard his magic ring while he goes to Calcutta to milk a cow. If Tom does a good job Chip will reward him with a large succulent salmon, but if not he will throw him out of the house for good. Chip then sets off for Calcutta on his flying motorcycle. Tom starts guarding the ring, without noticing Jerry who climbs up on the table and puts the ring on his head as if it were a crown. Tom sees him and orders him to give it back, but Jerry runs out of the house and the cat chases him. After losing Tom, Jerry tries in vain to extract the ring from his head. He decides to have it removed by a jeweler, who is going to lunch. Tom, using a disguise, sneaks into the shop as the jeweler leaves. As Tom tries in vain to extract the ring, a spell causes the disguise to fall off. Unmasked, Tom chases Jerry throughout the shop. However, the two must leave when the jeweler returns.

Jerry runs away to the house of the fortune teller Droopy, whose secretary is an Irish dog named Butch. Fascinated by Jerry's ring, Butch tries to take it away from him, but another spell locks him in Droopy's crystal ball. Jerry, chased by Tom, ends up in an alley where he comes across a stray cat who wants to eat him. Tom saves Jerry and, using the ring on his head, makes various kinds of objects fall on the cat. However, Butch soon arrives, and together with the stray cat begins to chase Tom (who is holding Jerry in his hand). After losing his pursuers, Tom slips on a banana peel enlarged by the ring and ends up against the door of a pet shop. The owner Margaret takes them inside: Jerry ends up in a cage with three other mice, the little Nibbles and the two thugs Freddie and Joey, while Tom is put in a cage with Spike and Tyke, who attack him. The mice torment both Nibbles and Jerry, so Jerry uses the ring to turn Freddie and Joey into cheese and enlarge Nibbles, who breaks out of the cage and chases the two ex-mice out of the shop.

A little boy enters the store and asks his mother to buy him Jerry. The boy plays with him until the ring allows Tom to escape from his cage, then snatches Jerry from the boy's hand. The boy tells his mother: she asks for help from a policeman who sends three patrol cars after Tom, who also has to escape from Butch and the stray cat. In the meantime, Spike and Tyke also leave the store: the latter is trampled by Tom, so the two dogs also join the chase, along with two other stray cats who happened to be on the path. After a daring chase, Tom ends up in a dead end, so Jerry uses the ring to block the pursuers. Back home, Tom wants to use a blowtorch to remove the ring, so Jerry runs away and finds a ring-removing liquid, thanks to which he can finally free himself. Tom discovers him and asks for the ring, but Jerry throws him into a pipe that leads to the basement. Tom tries to take it, but the ring gets stuck on his finger. When Chip arrives, he finds Tom with the ring on his finger and, believing that he tried to steal it, kicks him out of the house. The ring comes off his finger and falls to the ground, producing a spell that teleports all the pursuers from before along with Nibbles, Freddie and Joey, forcing Tom to flee.

Chip then gives Jerry Tom's salmon, but the mouse turns him into a piece of cheese.
