Yes, the reason why "pick up on" is not good is that it is too idiomatic, and just the sort of thing a foreign language learner of English might have difficulty with. I've corrected with "scent" or "smell", which are words that can be found in a dictionary. "Detect" is a less common word. It is correct, but I think a bit abstruse. Maybe simply "find" is the best, even though it is a repetition of the intro. Or maybe smell is the best, because that is what the dogs actually do. We face these problems on every page. @Macdonald-ross: To me (not a native speaker) "scent" is less common than "smell", and "detect" seems the most familiar. Anyway, thanks for your comment. I feel lonely, and thanks to you I felt much better. Now I know that there is some human being in this world, who noticed my existence, and even spoke up to me. PS. I've never encountered the word "abstruse", though I have read a lot, for years. Why did you use such a recherché word? ;-)

Quite right, 'abstruse' is not good! Macdonald-ross (talk) 05:34, 29 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Macdonald-ross: But better than "recherché" ;-) 85.193.252.19 (talk) 19:56, 29 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
