Redesign of user pages.

change

Hey! Well, I was reading your userpage, and I saw that you are willing to do redesigns. No pressure or anything, but it would be greatly appreciated if you could take a crack at mine. If not, that's cool too :)

P.S. I hope prop 2 makes it through. That would kick butt. DefenseSupportParty (talk) 08:00, 15 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I really hope so too! Do you like the new star I proposed? I think it's more orange. I don't know. We'll see about that star. Do you have any ideas about how you want your userpage to look? Somewhat like mine, only with a different color scheme? obentomusubi 08:02, 15 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
I do like the new star. It would be a refreshing change to our current situation, which lightly put, is ugly. It makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside ;). As for the userpage, something like that. I dunno, I'm not usually an aesthetic person, but even I can see that my userpage is ugly. Anything you can think of will be better than what I have :D.
P.S. I added your monobook.css to mine. These rounded corners rock. Thanks! DefenseSupportParty (talk) 08:05, 15 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Cool! What kind of feel do you want from your page? What dominant color would you like? obentomusubi 08:19, 15 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Gosh, I love you artists. Uh, for a feel, I guess I would like something approachable. As in, "I want you to approach me if you have any questions," as much sense as that makes :p. For a dominant color, probably blue. Respectfully, DefenseSupportParty (talk) 08:24, 15 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! I love you too! Blue's a great choice. One of my favorite colors to design with. I'll get started at my sandbox. obentomusubi 08:28, 15 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks so much! I appreciate the effort. Very respectfully, DefenseSupportParty (talk) 08:36, 15 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

New image for CM16
Woah! I had to actually use digital manipulation to see the cross in that image. I've made you a new image Cheers :) fr33kman talk 01:27, 21 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Looks good, but I'll let the designer choose between the two.-- † CM16 t c 03:45, 21 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
I apologize. I chose FM's image because the cross can be more clearly seen. I like your image also, but it took me a bit to see the whole cross. Cheers, –obentomusubi 04:08, 21 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Problem with the infobox on Golconda, Illinois

change

Hi there. Can you fix the problem with the template on Golconda, Illinois please without changing much to the template itself? Thanks, Razorflame 18:12, 18 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I apologize, but there are so many complex parameters in the template, I haven't the faintest idea how the template works. I will keep trying to figure out the template, but I apologize if I cannot fix it. Cheers, –obentomusubi 21:08, 18 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
No worries if you can't fix it. Cheers, Razorflame 17:21, 19 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Aha! I found the source of all problems. I believe that Template:Location map USA Illinois is the source of the problems with that template. Try to find the problem in there. Cheers, Razorflame 22:04, 22 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Icons

change

Please read my continuing comment on the GA and VGA icons on Simple Talk. Right now we have inconsistencies across this Wikipedia on official pages on what denotes a GA. It looks highly unprofessional. The Rambling Man on tour (talk) 01:28, 19 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I have read it, and I'm not quite sure what you're talking about. Are you talking about the pages themselves or the template? I reverted the templates to the original en.wiki templates. –obentomusubi 01:35, 19 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Please see all the articles I refer to. In each case the icon for GA looks different. One is a silver star, one is a blunted silver star, one is a green cross in a circle. They must look the same and I suggest they all get reverted to en.wiki, i.e. a green cross. Thanks. The Rambling Man on tour (talk) 01:37, 19 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I have doubts that's the best tone or message, especially for a newbie who wants to talk to you. Someone might think if he forgets to put new text under old text, or the first time he forgets to assume good faith, he'll be reported to be blocked. Just a thought. :) Toliar (talk) 04:24, 21 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

WP:IAR

change

Obento, my friend, I want to support you on the same end as Bluegoblin7 was. Wikipedia's most important policy, Be Bold! applies to the icon proposal. Even if people don't think consensus has been reached, WP:IAR is more than enough to justify this. If people disagree, they can be bold and revert it.

Whatever you decide to do, let it be known that me and BG7 are behind you. We're both tired of the lull that Simple Wiki has gotten into, and we just want people to start changing things. It is time for something different, and I think that we all need to play our part. Don't let the others get you down; your ideas are fantastic and a definite contribution. I'm tired of the bureaucracy that this wiki is engaging in; we're thirty users strong, and a bureaucracy isn't necessary. Let it be controlled anarchy.

P.S. 1500th edit :D

P.P.S. You should join us on IRC, it's good times. Cheers! DefenseSupportParty 23:09, 21 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

:D Thank you. As I had told BlueGoblin, I am going to need an administrator's help in the process because I will need someone to add some Javascript code to the Common.js. If I were an administrator, that would not be a problem. But since I have no interest in becoming an administrator in the near future, I am going to need external help. Icons 2

change

Hi,

I think there is a problem... the icons are displaying at the bottom of the article, not the top. I know I said just do it etc above but frankly I do oppose having the icons at the bottom as they are not seen until the user scrolls down.

Also, can you possibly implement the new style icons all at once rather than in stages, as seems to have happened so far.

Regards,

Goblin 20:33, 22 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I've reverted the changes as there were multiple b0rkings - I can explain each in detail if you so desire. Please test this system thoroughly before proceeding. Thanks, Goblin 21:32, 22 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Yes, please do tell. Have you purged the cache? It should work if you purge the cache. Let me test by blanking my monobook.js. Cheers, obentomusubi 22:05, 22 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Well, that is curious, isn't it? obentomusubi 22:15, 22 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I purged the cache - indeed, I purge my cache just for simple reloads. I noticed two main errors: one, the stars were at the bottom of the articles, as I mentioned above, and secondly "pvgood" (and possibly others) was just displaying as that - pvgood. The code was removed from MediaWiki:Common.js by PeterSymonds when I alerted those on IRC that there was an issue, and I reverted all other changes. I suggest that you do more thorough testing, perhaps on a test wiki, before re-implementing this. Thanks, Goblin 11:55, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Alright. I'm sorry! I take 100% accountability! obentomusubi 18:08, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
My apologies if that sounded as if I was trying to have a go at you! It was not my intention, I just wanted to make you aware as to why I undid the changes. If I can assist by the way, please let me know :). Just a suggestion also, shall we implement the "new" icons first and then work on the actual formatting? That way then there isn't a split implementation of the icons displayed. Regards, Goblin 18:13, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
I would like that very much. ;) I'm sorry, JavaScript isn't necessarily my forte. CSS is more my thing. :) obentomusubi 18:53, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
:) I'll have a looksy into it. Couldn't it be done through CSS? BTW: new icons look good, just remember that WP:PGA, WP:GA etc also need doing ;) Cheers, Goblin 19:39, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Curiously enough, on my Carpenters Wiki (I'm an admin there) it works fine. It's at Wikia, under the Monobook skin. And it functions fine. obentomusubi 19:43, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

More icons

change

Where are these icons you're changing up? I can't find where the good article icons or whatever is being added is winding up on the page? I see categories, but I don't see an icon anywhere, especially not in the top right corner where they've always been. Either way (talk) 02:53, 24 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Try purging your cache by pressing Ctrl + F5. If that doesn't work, may I ask which browser and OS you are using? Thanks, obentomusubi 02:54, 24 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
The Crtl + F5 worked. I'm not a fan of these changes at all. These stars are way too cartoony. It may be the colors, it may be that they're in gradients rather than solid colors. Whatever it is, I'm not a fan. Either way (talk) 02:58, 24 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
I'm sorry. I was simply being bold. obentomusubi 03:00, 24 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
I would have to agree with Either way here. I would much rather the icons just go back to being the way that they were before. I thought that they were fine the way they were. Thanks, Razorflame 03:01, 24 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
However, the discussion at Simple talk indicated that the majority (11-3) were fine with the icons being changed. I know both of you voted. Perhaps we can compromise. obentomusubi 03:02, 24 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I guess only you voted, Razorflame. That said, voting is powerful. I will leave it at that. ;)obentomusubi 03:06, 24 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
And if you were to note what other users said, such as TRM, I do not believe that we should even bother changing the VGA icon. I would recommend that the VGA star be changed to whatever the English Wikipedia has for their VGA star and that the GA icon be changed to whatever the English Wikipedia has for their GA star. Thanks, Razorflame 03:08, 24 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
And don't go changing the protection templates without consensus first. Thanks, Razorflame 03:09, 24 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
The English Wikipedia abolished GA icons long ago. Does that mean I think abolishing GA icons altogether would be of help? Of course not. We might as well abolish good articles altogether if that were the case. We don't have to follow everything en.wiki does. If that were the case, I believe more people would have agreed with me with bringing over Wikipedia 1.0 and ratings from en.wiki. obentomusubi 03:12, 24 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Hence, I've proposed the protection templates at Simple talk. Cheers, obentomusubi 03:12, 24 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
I'm not saying that we don't need a GA icon, I'm just saying that I would rather have our VGA icon be the star that we originally had it as. It was more professional looking than what we have currently, and it would put less weight onto our Wikipedia being closed. The main thing is, we should NOT be put back up for closing again, and therefore, I think that we should revert our VGA icon back to what it was prior to the icons being changed. Razorflame 03:14, 24 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
So having a "cartoony" icon (as Either Way put it) will make us look less "professional" and will lead to having Simple English Wikipedia closed? I would disagree. I think the main argument from the proponents of closure of Simple is that "Simple English" cannot be defined. I would even argue that the stars are more aesthetically pleasing than previously. In my experience, things that are aesthetically pleasing tend to be accepted more than things that aren't. Understand that I'm not saying the old star is not as aesthetically pleasing. However, I am making the argument that the previous star is more pointed, as opposed to being rounded like the current star. I find round things to be generally more aesthetically pleasing. obentomusubi 03:19, 24 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
That is not a good reason to change our icon. Who cares if it is more pointed if it at least looks professional? Your icon does not look professional in any way, shape, or form, and frankly, it should not even be on the Simple English Wikipedia. Razorflame 03:24, 24 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Haha, love you too. obentomusubi 03:25, 24 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Go tell the users on the French Wikipedia that their icon is unprofessional and that it basically sucks. They'd sure love that! obentomusubi 03:26, 24 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

So, I take it you like onigiri :)? Do you do obento for your lunches? I lived in Tokyo for 13 months and learned to love bento when I was there. I'm currently taking a Japanese language course because I really want to move back there for good, but I have to learn Japanese fluently to be licensed as a doctor there. I miss japan like a hooked fish misses the water. It's the best place I've ever lived (ok, maybe Amsterdam comes a close second) :) I've got quite a large collection of bento boxes, mostly traditional ones. I love umi-boshi and rice!! Edit Warring

Hello, The Obento Musubi,

It looks like there was a content dispute over what icons to use for good/very good articles/article candidates; the respective templates have now been protected so only sysops can edit them. I suggest we talk about what icons to use on Simple Talk, and only change them when the community has come to a conclusion. I also want to remind you that edit warring may be grounds for blocking, please note that this is the only message I write to you.

Thank you for your understanding. --Eptalon (talk) 20:11, 26 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, CM. You've been one of the nicest editors to me at the Simple English Wikipedia. I tried to help, and I truly had good intentions; I am sorry that it seems people are becoming less receptive of my icon ideas. They're getting tired of it, and so am I. So I waved the white flag because I don't need this stress, especially on spring break. Best regards, obentomusubi 03:24, 27 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
They tend not to be very open to new proposals, you just got to roll with it. I've been working on getting images here off and on since February 2008, still don't got it, but we're the closest we've ever been. Thanks to Fr33kman.--   CM16  03:33, 27 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hmm... same here. I'm not very good at expanding articles, since I have a hang up on attribution and citing sources properly, which I can't do well. obentomusubi 03:38, 27 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yesterday's drama

change

Obento, can I just say that I can understand that you must be feeling pretty low right now. Wikipedia (any of them) is not an easy place to belong to, but it is a worthwhile place to belong to. I think you have a lot to offer the community here. I think you sell yourself short in the editing of mainspace area, but that's for another time. Yesterday was pretty intense as far as seWP goes. On enWP it would be an everyday occurance, but here, it was intense! Try not to let it bug you too much, take a day or two to chill out. Your idea with the icons was a good one and it will be accepted after a chill-out time. As for rollback; check back with me in a week and if no one else has, I'll grant it back to you at that time (along with Razorflame). Don't let any of this be thought of as a personal reflection on yourself, it isn't. It's more of a reflection of the current stress level of seWP than on your ideas!! Take care!! :) fr33kman talk 05:07, 27 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Oh, I hadn't realized that my rollback rights were revoked. I'm not surprised, though. Thank you for being supportive, Freekman. You are one of the few people who have made me feel more than welcome here. Thank you, and thank you to all the people who have been nothing but flowers and roses since I came. You know who you are. ;) obentomusubi 05:22, 27 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Well, life ain't easy for none of us is it?! I'm one of those people that really understands that :) Probably something to do with being a doctor and seeing both the best and the worst life throws at folk. Revoking rollback was done by Kennedy and was really a technical thing to stop the war; I agree that it needed to be done because it was done to both of you and you both were a little hot-headed and needed to be calmed down. It's been a real problem for Razorflame because he's got global rollback and is habituated to its presence. Don't fret its removal, you'll get it back. As I said, I'll give it back to both of you in a week if no one else has. In the mean time, get your head down, do the things you're best at here (maybe help with Atheism) and perhaps take a night off, and go for a walk or see a movie :) All the best, take care! fr33kman talk 05:36, 27 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Okay then. Hope we can keep in touch! :) obentomusubi 05:40, 27 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

GFDL attribute

I have created a template {{GFDL attribute}} that I would like to get your help with. I'd like it to automatically create a box at the bottom of the page, right above the footer section. Do you have time (and interest) to help me with that? Thanks! EhJJTALK 22:06, 5 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hello! How would this work, exactly? obentomusubi 22:29, 5 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
Well, the template would be filled in and put somewhere near the bottom of the wiki text (similar to how {{vgood}} is used). However, when the page is viewed, the notice would be placed at the bottom of the page, just above (or inside) the footer message (where it says "This page was last changed on..."). I am asking as you seem to have some experience with this, but if it's too difficult or not feasible, then that's ok. Did I answer your question or did you want to know something else? EhJJTALK 23:13, 5 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
No, I think I understand. The problem is, the idea is mainly from the French Wikipedia, so I'm not 100% sure about the nitty-gritty behind it, but I'll try to figure something out. Cheers, obentomusubi 00:14, 6 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Jesus

change

You recently editted out this sentence, This section is about the birth, ministry and death of Jesus. It is taken from the four books of the Bible, called the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. They were written in the 1st century AD. Nearly all other writing about Jesus is based on these four books.[1] with the question "Why is the first sentence necessary?" Well, since you asked, I'll tell you.

The Jesus page has been subject to two incredibly tiresome and timeconsuming discussion. One was driven by the editor "Coppertwig" who was so persistent that it drove me nearly hysterical. This annoying person (whose other edits do not seem to be quite so ridiculous) wanted the words "only some people believe this." written after every statement pertaining to Jesus' life. Saying that the information came from John's Gospel, and citing that as the source was not sufficient. Saying that it says at the beginning of the section, or beginning of the article that these things are believed by Christians was not sufficient to halt this ridiculous insertion of the words "only some people believe this" (and similar) at every possible point in the narrative. This person only backed off when eventually asked if "Coppertwig" if was in fact a Copper stick, ie a stirrer.

Since then there has been an equally ridiculous discussion with a young person who insists that Jesus has always been portrayed by Europeans as a European and that he should look like a Palestinian Arab. This tedious person did not seem to comprehend that Jesus was not a Palestinian Arab. He was a Jew, and until the advent of gharish hand-coloured 18th/19th century Bibles which gave him yellow hair, Jesus was almost always conscientiously portayed as a Jew. That has been the trend ever since about 300 AD when some Roman Christian painted an entirely Jewish Jesus in a catacomb.

Any changes that you make to that relatively stable article are likely to have to be defended at the most extraordinry and unpleasant length. Amandajm (talk) 06:54, 17 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Woo excellent thanks! I tried <font align="right"> but that only made the text bigger for some reason... Thanks! :) Kennedy (talk) 18:33, 22 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Icon code

change

If you have some code you want injected into common.css or the .js let me know, or if there is a revision it is located in? Best, NonvocalScream (talk) 05:08, 1 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the warm welcome back! The title icon code is located here. It worked, but between last year and now, somebody undid the code. obentomusubi 05:15, 1 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Done in 1831065. Best, NonvocalScream (talk) 05:36, 1 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
It doesn't seem to work. I'm officially confuzzled. :( obentomusubi 05:42, 1 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps if you clear the cache, and purge whatever page your looking at? NonvocalScream (talk) 05:44, 1 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Please let me know if it still does not work, I would have to remove it from the sitewide js until the code can be reviewed, altered, fixed, et cetera. NonvocalScream (talk) 05:57, 1 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
It doesn't quite work yet. I'll test it in my userspace first, then I'll notify you when I get it up and running. obentomusubi 05:58, 1 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Update: I fixed it. Turns out I forgot the first half of the code. The current code can be found here. Cheers, obentomusubi 06:05, 1 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Ok, refresh and purge, see if it works. NonvocalScream (talk) 06:10, 1 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

It does. Thanks! obentomusubi 06:10, 1 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

I just realized that the code in the Common.js doesn't work. Is it possible to scrap all the title code you put in and replace it with the one in my monobook.js? Thanks! obentomusubi 09:17, 1 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

If you'll clarify this for me, I'll do it for you. You want the code that NVS put in removed and replaced with what exactly? The entirety of your monobook? Cheers, Lauryn (utc) 16:33, 1 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! I asked NonvocalScream if he could remove this code from MediaWiki:Common.js:
/**
 * Title icons
 *
 * Looks for title icons (class="icon") and
 * Shifts them to the right of the title on the page.
 */

function titleicons() {
  var h1 = document.getElementsByTagName("h1")[0];
  var icons = getElementsByClass( "icon", document, "div" );
  for( var j = icons.length; j > 0; --j ){
    icons[j-1].style.display = "block"; /* cancels "display: none" by default */
    icons[j-1].style.marginLeft = "0.35em";
    if( skin == "modern" ){
      icons[j-1].style.marginTop = "0.2em";
    }
    h1.parentNode.insertBefore(icons[j-1], h1); /* shift of the element */
  }
}
addOnloadHook(titleicons);

/**
 * Title icons
 *
 * Looks for title icons (class="icon") and
 * Shifts them to the right of the title on the page.
 */

function titleicons() {
  var h1 = document.getElementsByTagName("h1")[0];
  var icons = getElementsByClass( "icon", document, "div" );
  for( var j = icons.length; j > 0; --j ){
    icons[j-1].style.display = "block"; /* cancels "display: none" by default */
    icons[j-1].style.marginLeft = "0.35em";
    if( skin == "modern" ){
      icons[j-1].style.marginTop = "0.2em";
    }
    h1.parentNode.insertBefore(icons[j-1], h1); /* shift of the element */
  }
}
addOnloadHook(titleicons);

and replace it with:

/**
 * getElementsByClass : searches the elements of the page by "class" parameter
 */
function getElementsByClass(searchClass, node, tag) {
  if (node == null) node = document;
  if (tag == null) tag = '*';
  return getElementsByClassName(node, tag, searchClass);
}

/**
 * Title icons
 *
 * Looks for title icons (class="icon") and
 * Shifts them to the right of the title on the page.
 */

function titleicons() {
  var h1 = document.getElementsByTagName("h1")[0];
  var icons = getElementsByClass( "icon", document, "div" );
  for( var j = icons.length; j > 0; --j ){
    icons[j-1].style.display = "block"; /* cancels "display: none" by default */
    icons[j-1].style.marginLeft = "0.35em";
    if( skin == "modern" ){
      icons[j-1].style.marginTop = "0.2em";
    }
    h1.parentNode.insertBefore(icons[j-1], h1); /* shift of the element */
  }
}
addOnloadHook(titleicons);

Thanks! obentomusubi 17:15, 1 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

There must be something that I am missing. If I replace the first set that is in there now with the second set that you are requesting, it breaks all the code on the page. Any ideas? Lauryn (utc) 22:03, 1 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hmm. I'm not really good with Javascript. What I did was I took this from the French Wikipedia, who uses this icon system so that icons don't overlap and are neat and organized. It currently works for me. How exactly does this break the code? Just wondering. Cheers, obentomusubi 03:56, 2 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • And I also note that the new changes to the icon templates are not not working because of unresolved dependency... e.g. the sitewide code I had to remove. So perhaps revert the local addtions? Thoughts? NonvocalScream (talk) 04:01, 2 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

main page

change

Just a suggestion but maybe make the colors a little more vivid.--   CR90

Well done on the main page. I'm really impressed! Thanks for your work on this, I really appreciate it. Barras talk 16:32, 1 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thank you! I've been working on it practically nonstop since yesterday afternoon. obentomusubi 16:33, 1 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

VGA/PVGA icons

change

While I'm sure your intentions are honourable, please wait for a community consensus on how icons and banners should appear before simply rolling out your own way of doing things. This is a wiki and it works on consensus, not unilateral actions. You've done this once before so you are aware of the way things work here. I have reverted your changes until we have a clear consensus that we (a) need to change the icons and (b) need to use the ones you have selected on our behalf. WP:ST#Changes to icons. Please stop making random changes without discussion or consensus. After losing your rollback for this exact same thing last year, you should know better. I have reverted your changes to the (V)GA icons, and will be reviewing others. If you want to start a new debate, the community is thataway. PeterSymonds (talk) 11:58, 3 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
