WWE pay-per-view

Money in the Bank is a yearly professional wrestling pay-per-view and livestreaming show made by WWE since 2010.[4] It takes place in May, June or July each year, therefore happening between the company's two biggest yearly events, WrestleMania and SummerSlam. The 2017 event was the only Money in the Bank event to feature only one brand, being exclusive to SmackDown.[5]

The event is based around the Money in the Bank ladder match, which previously took place at WrestleMania. The winner of this multi-person ladder match gets a contract that they can use anytime to get a match for a championship of their choosing within the next 12 months.[a][7] Some winners chose the cash in their contracts on the same day. A women's variation exists since the 2017 event.[7]

  2. ↑ 2.0 2.1 2.2 In December 2013, the WWE Championship and World Heavyweight Championship were unified, retiring the World Heavyweight Championship while the WWE Championship became known as the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. The 2014, 2015, and 2016 events featured only one Money in the Bank ladder match with its contract being for a match for the unified title (which was called the WWE Championship again after the 2016 event when the brand split was reintroduced).
  3. ↑ James Ellsworth retrieved the briefcase for Carmella. On the following episode of SmackDown Live, Carmella was forced to give up the briefcase and a rematch was scheduled for the June 27 episode with Ellsworth banned from ringside. Carmella definitively won that match without help.
