How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

January 2022

Hello! Thank you for creating Category:2022 in entertainment. However, we normally need at least three pages in a category before it is created. Because categories are a way to group together similar articles, there is no need to create a new category for just one or two articles. If you think there might be more pages to add to the new category, please add them now. Thank you. Auntof6 (talk) 07:10, 9 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Recent troublemaker

Can you have a short look at the troublemaker please? Recent hostile deletion of uptodate and reliable sources. --Al-Zaynir (talk) 19:30, 8 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

(talk page stalker) @Al-Zaynir please resolve the issue with that user yourself if you have a problem, don't use someone's talk page unless if you have a problem. MrMeAndMrMeLet's talk 19:40, 8 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Periodic table template

Is there any reason why you removed the colors in Template:Periodic Table? Lights and freedom (talk) 20:02, 17 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Lights and freedom: Hi. I synced it with the enwiki version, which was more accurate and did not contain unconfirmed elements. Regards, --IWI (talk) 20:04, 17 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
I agree that elements 119 and 120 should not be included. I'm not sure which enwiki version you're referring to. If it's :en:Template:Periodic table, that one only has the s, f, d, and p blocks. I think it would be better if the template includes all the types of elements, like alkali metals, lanthanides, etc., not just the blocks. Lights and freedom (talk) 20:09, 17 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Block evasion

Please block Special:Contributions/545e u eye636mev ryehr6 for block evasion. If you don't know them, they keep making sockpuppet accounts to ask people to make changes to the horror film article on enwiki. Lights and freedom (talk) 17:10, 2 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Lights and freedom: could you link me to a previous account? I can't block as I'm not familliar. --IWI (talk) 17:11, 2 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
Special:Contributions/KcauqElZtak, original account was en:Special:Contributions/Jinnifer. Lights and freedom (talk) 17:13, 2 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Lights and freedom: I'll have a talk with some other admins and we will keep watch. Thanks. --IWI (talk) 17:17, 2 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

The block evader is trying to lock me out of my account

Got a notification saying multiple failed attempts to login. Kaseng55 (talk) 04:10, 18 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Kaseng55: He does this to me all the time (and I get such notifications all the time). As long as you've got a strong password, the chances your account being compromised are next to zero. SHB2000 (talk) 04:24, 18 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
Good thing I have a strong password.
I searched these IP address here: https://www.abuseipdb.com/
And some of them are engaged in hacking, brute force or fraudulent activity. So be cautious. Kaseng55 (talk) 04:27, 18 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
I'm not very concerned. w:WP:LTA/GRP is an IP-hopping vandal, so you might receive multiple notifications of such, but realistically it's next to impossible for him to actually guess the correct password. SHB2000 (talk) 04:30, 18 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
He's been harassing us, virtually without break, since 2006. (The only break was 2015-2018 when he was in jail for stalking and harassment.) He can't actually hurt you, but by all means use a strong password. Antandrus (talk) 04:35, 18 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hopefully we won't have the Twinkie edit war again though... SHB2000 (talk) 04:40, 18 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
Indeed. (Am I a bad person for finding it hilarious? - don't quote me. lol) Antandrus (talk) 04:41, 18 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
No I find it hilarious too (but let's be honest, the quality of a lot of articles in simplewiki are a joke). SHB2000 (talk) 04:46, 18 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Talk page protected

IWI: I semi-protected your talk page due to the vandalism from IPs. If you do not want this, feel free to ask to have it removed. -- Auntof6 (talk) 05:58, 18 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Auntof6, IWI could just remove it himself since he's an admin ;) --Ferien (talk) 06:26, 18 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Auntof6: Thank you very much :) --IWI (talk) 06:45, 18 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Ferien: Ack! I forgot that! -- Auntof6 (talk) 06:48, 18 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Don't take this too seriously. Someone just wants to let you know you did something really silly.

T.O.T.S.

Hi, thank you for removing the QD, I added it because this is what it looked like at the time. It looks better now. Cheers, Hockeycatcat (talk) 03:18, 23 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Hockeycatcat: That still wouldn't meet A4 because being on Disney Junior is a sufficient claim of significance for A4 not to be met. Thanks, --IWI (talk) 03:24, 23 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

T.O.T.S.

Hi, IWI. I noticed that you declined the QD on this, noting that it is "not about a person". Just FYI, the QD option for notability (A4) applies to more than just people. For example, it applies to products, which a television series is. I'm not commenting on whether this one is notable, just that it would qualify for A4 if it were not. -- Auntof6 (talk) 03:18, 23 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Auntof6: Ah okay. I did know this, but never thought it would qualify as a product. Thanks for letting me know. Either way, a claim of being on the Disney Channel wouldn't meet A4. Thanks, --IWI (talk) 03:22, 23 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Recent block

Hi, ImprovedWikiImprovment! I noticed that you blocked 185.219.140.172, but they only made 1 edit and hadn't been warned at all. Was a block really necessary in this case? Cheers, Hockeycatcat (talk) (changes) 10:10, 19 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Yes because they had been doing the same thing on several IP addresses. Regards, --IWI (talk) 10:10, 19 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
It's just a reference addition, that doesn't seem like vandalism, I'd say just leave a message on the guys talk page and then if he does it again block him, But it's your choice at the end of the day. N1TH Music (talk) 12:06, 27 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
Considering the same behaviour leading to the block on enwiki, I'd say it was vandalism. --IWI (talk) 22:47, 27 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
@ImprovedWikiImprovment I'm still not completely convinced, I'm blocked on the en.wiki and part of the reason I'm here is to prove my competence, and capability I don't think we should judge people based on another wiki's events, I'd say give the guy 1 chance. But Right now I supposed we just wait see if he makes an unblock request, that shows he cares to some extent. N1TH Music (talk) 19:08, 29 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
@N1TH Music: It looks like the IP is an open proxy so it is moot now, but I stand by my action. I wasn't "judging"; I was taking a technical action to prevent damage to the wiki. We do use behaviour on other wikis to make a decision about whether further disruption is likely, hence why we have ONESTRIKE for accounts (which is policy). We will never block a person not causing disruption here though, of course, but someone causing issues cross-wiki who starts causing those same problems here is likely to be given fewer chances, and in the case of accounts we often give them just one. --IWI (talk) 23:14, 29 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Ah, I see. Just wondering! Cheers, Hockeycatcat (talk) (changes) 10:11, 19 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Well it was on enwiki, but the onestrike principle was used, as more abuse from IP is likely. --IWI (talk) 10:12, 19 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

That's understandable, I'm glad that ONESTRIKE also applies to IPs. Hockeycatcat (talk) (changes) 10:13, 19 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, all rules are applicable for all users and IPs. DRC (User:TTP1233) (talk . e-mail . contrib) 10:14, 19 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
Actually, it doesn't word for word, but I used the principle to do what seemed best for the wiki in this particular case (the spirit of it). --IWI (talk) 10:15, 19 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi ImprovedWikiImprovment, if you ever have some time you might check out Atom, if you think it's simple enough, if it covers all important points. It's at WP:PGA right now. Thanks! Lights and freedom (talk) 22:47, 3 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Helping with a research project in Simplification

Hello ImprovedWikiImprovment,

I'm reaching out to you because I am working on a research project on simplification and am looking to collaborate with domain experts.

A quick introduction: I am a researcher interested in text simplification and am working towards publishing a resource in text simplification based on Simple Wikipedia (quite a rich encyclopedia). We believe this resource, which we will make public, could be valuable to educate and increasing awareness of text simplification.

Some colleagues and I are looking to collaborate with domain experts in the creation of the resource. We've secured some budget for our research project, so there's the possibility to remunerate a few experts that would work with us.

I do not mean to spam you, so feel free to disregard/delete if you feel this is inappropriate (and I apologize). On the other hand, if you are interested, please feel free to reach out, either directly on Wikipedia or by email (phillab@berkeley.edu) and I would be happy to tell you more.

Thank you, and sorry again if you feel this is inappropriate,

Philippe Laban
