Brief AWB perm request

change

I would like AWB perm temporarily. I dont actually intend to use it to make changes, but rather to generate a list of articles which may have bare URLs, then to run Citation Bot on that list. To clarify, there will be no changes made using the tool, but I need to be on the checkpage for this to work. Mako001 (C)  (T)  09:56, 6 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Does anyone even monitor this page anymore? Mako001 (C)  (T)  16:01, 14 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Or should I be posting this elsewhere now? Mako001 (C)  (T)  16:01, 14 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Mako001: Sorry for the lack of response. How long would you need the permission for? -- Auntof6 (talk) 20:10, 14 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Auntof6: Maybe an hour or two, it depends on what find, but shouldn't be any longer than a day. Mako001 (C)  (T)  04:34, 15 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Mako001: I'm willing to give you the permission, we just need to coordinate me giving it at the time where you're ready to use it. Either you could let me know when that would be, or if it's easy enough maybe I could generate the list for you?
If it helps, my time offset is UTC−07:00. You could give me the day/time you'd like the permission in either my local time or in basic UTC. I actually have my Wikimedia accounts set to UTC time anyway. -- Auntof6 (talk) 04:17, 17 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Any timeframe that includes UTC:23:00 to 15:00 on Sunday would work, that should give plenty of time to sort it out, and allow some extra "contingency" time in case things don't quite run as smoothly as I hope, both with the AWB stuff and real life stuff. Mako001 (C)  (T)  14:30, 17 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Auntof6: Regarding you generating the list, the regex search thing sometimes takes a bit of refinement whilst working on it to get the best results, so it may be a bit messy trying to do it that way, as I'm UTC+8. Mako001 (C)  (T)  14:34, 17 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Mako001: That timeframe crosses midnight, so just to clarify, do you mean starting on Sunday just before midnight, then ending on Monday afternoon, UTC time?
I totally understand about regexes getting messy. I have a bunch of them that I've developed over the years, and most of them took a lot of testing. Sometimes I think it would be good if everyone could use AWB and you only needed permission if you were going to change anything. It can be so useful for generating lists like you're doing. -- Auntof6 (talk) 04:41, 19 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yep, theres nothing quite like it for that. Sorry, I meant from 23:00UTC Saturday to 15:00UTC Sunday. Mako001 (C)  (T)  21:42, 20 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Mako001: OK, got it. I'll leave a message here when I add the permission. You can reply here when you're done, and I or another admin will remove it. -- Auntof6 (talk) 03:11, 21 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Mako001 (C)  (T)  06:44, 22 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Mako001: I've given you permission early, so that I don't forget. When you're done, please reply here. If you need it a little longer than you said, no problem. Happy regexing! -- Auntof6 (talk) 21:18, 22 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Would I be able to get permission to make some actual edits, specifically to remove square brackets around otherwise bare URLs? Whilst I did get technical permission, that was based on me not needing to make any actual edits, so it would be untrustworthy of me to make edits. The regex I would use has been totally reliable on enwiki. Mako001 (C)  (T)  00:08, 23 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Mako001: Can you:
  • Do a few such changes and link to them so I can see exactly what you have in mind
  • Tell me how many such changes you would be doing and how long it would take
Then I'll look at it and give you an answer. -- Auntof6 (talk) 01:46, 23 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Auntof6:[1][2][3]. Fairly simple, just removing the "[" and the "]" from references that would otherwise be a bare url. Then Citation Bot can identify them as a bare URL and fix them. How long it would take? Depends what you consider enough to need a flood flag. At ten seconds per edit, a bit over an hour, though that would be deliberately taking it slow. Mako001 (C)  (T)  02:08, 23 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

┌─────────────────────────────────┘
@Mako001: That sounds reasonable to me. One of the rules of the flood flag is that you make only the approved changes while you have it. In case you're also working on something else, I'll wait to give it to you until you tell me you're ready to start. You might have to re-logon to AWB to get it to take effect. Then when you're finished, let me know and I'll remove the flag, after which you might have to re-logon again to get the removal to take effect. (At least you used to have to do that, I'm not really sure if it's still that way.) --Auntof6 (talk) 03:44, 23 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Auntof6: Ok, let me know when you've added the flood flag, and I'll keep the edits to en.wiki until it's added. Mako001 (C)  (T)  05:27, 23 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Mako001: I've given you the flood flag for 3 hours. When you finish, you can either ask for it to be removed or just wait out the 3 hours. -- Auntof6 (talk) 05:30, 23 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Done Mako001 (C)  (T)  06:11, 23 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Mako001: Flood flag removed. You may or may not need to log out and back in for the removal to take effect. Thanks for doing that cleanup! -- Auntof6 (talk) 06:12, 23 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
No problems. As I said, ten seconds per edit would've been me deliberately taking it slower than necessary. Mako001 (C)  (T)  06:15, 23 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Auntof6: Done with AWB perm, thank you. Mako001 (C)  (T)  13:36, 23 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

AWB request

change

I would like to use the AWB to help me fix typos, add, remove or replace categories. I also need to add templates like Authority Control to a vast number of pages. Thank you. 20 upper (talk) 11:36, 18 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

I am not sure you are trusted enough here with just 50 edits and a few days of tenure. Illusion Flame (talk) 11:41, 18 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Illusion Flame: I've used the program before, so I know how to use it very well. How many edits do I need right now? 20 upper (talk) 11:48, 18 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
@20 upper: To use AWB here, you need to have a specific, limited task in mind. If approved, the right is granted long enough to do the task, then it is removed. To start with, please pick one task and explain specifically what you want to do, how many pages would be involved, and how long it would take you to do the work.
Also be aware that requests for this right are not a vote, so comments from non-admins, like the one above, do not necessarily affect whether the right is given. -- Auntof6 (talk) 20:44, 18 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Auntof6: I need the tool until 27 June to add the authority control template to almost 29,874 pages in Category:Living people. Thanks. 20 upper (talk) 05:34, 19 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
  Comment: Note to admins: a similar request was recently rejected on Commons. Take it at what you will. SHB2000 (talk) 11:30, 19 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
@SHB2000: Stop the Wikihounding. 20 upper (talk) 12:29, 19 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Simply letting others know about incidents elsewhere across the Wikimedia world does not constitute wikihounding or harassment. SHB2000 (talk) 21:35, 19 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
@20 upper:   Not done because with AWB particularly, it is important for editors to know the differences between enwiki and simplewiki, as the tool has the potential to introduce errors to hundreds/thousands of pages at a time. The baseless accusation of wikihounding above is casting aspersions and the block on enwiki doesn't help much either. Please do keep note of the "one-strike" rule. --Ferien (talk) 16:05, 19 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Ferien: How can I prove to you guys I've changed? 20 upper (talk) 16:33, 19 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
20 upper, you can edit other pages, revert vandalism, create pages etc, to show you can work constructively here. Lots of editors manage to edit here successfully before appealing enwiki blocks. But really, the main reason why I'm marking this as not done is due to the fact you're new to this wiki. --Ferien (talk) 16:36, 19 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Ferien: Thank you for your response. I will edit constructively as you advised, and in December, January, or February, I will appeal my block. 20 upper (talk) 16:42, 19 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

It's been 15 days, and I'm not sure if it's too early to re-request, but during that time I've made 250 more edits, read through all the Simple Wikipedia policies, and realized that some of the articles could use some fixing because many of them are missing vital templates, and as part of my work here, I want to add those templates. Before deciding to utilize this account, I had also been editing for a while as an IP. I just need AWB for around four days, and I now know the distinction between enwiki and simplewiki. I've used AWB before so I'm very familiar with the program. 20 upper 20:48, 5 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hello, is anyone there? Either there aren't enough administrators, or nobody seems to be active on this wiki, so should I ping anyone? 20 upper 08:38, 6 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
@20 upper: I believe Ferien declined this request above. -- Auntof6 (talk) 10:36, 6 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Auntof6: That was 15 days ago; I'm re-requesting. 20 upper 10:40, 6 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Authority control templates are not needed on every page. I have reviewed a few of the pages in Category:Living people and most of the ones I checked would not display anything if a {{authority control}} template was added. I'm quite certain it is not necessary to add it to 29,874 pages. --Ferien (talk) 08:14, 12 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi Ferien, it does show something; it is added at the end of the article. It can only be seen on a desktop BTW.
I don't know if this pin works but I really hope it doesn't take you another six days to respond.
I won't add it to every page, just 80% of the said pages.
This templates are important and I want to add them to better the overall project. 20 upper 07:52, 14 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
20 upper, I am familiar with how the authority control template works, and was on desktop. The idea is that you should preview first to see whether authority control is required. If it does not appear in preview mode then it will not appear on the page, therefore making no visible change to the page so no change is needed. The fact you didn't seem to be aware of this quite important aspect of {{authority control}} perhaps indicates it isn't best to give you AWB access to potentially go and add this template to thousands of pages with no visible change. --Ferien (talk) 09:52, 14 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Ferien, but the documentation states: An empty instance of this template stays dormant in an article, until values are added to Wikidata, when it will then display them, so this template should be added to all biographies, whether or not there are authority control identifiers in Wikidata already. 20 upper 20:00, 14 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
20 upper, however until then, it is empty and so there is no visible change on the page. I would also ask, if it should be added to all biographies, should it just be done by a bot? Having users add it to all the pages seems pointless, if it can be done quickly by a bot. --Ferien (talk) 20:04, 14 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Ferien, having bots is great, but sometimes a human can do the task better because speed is not everything. AWB is for this purpose because it enables people like you and me to make bot-like edits because we don't want bots to do all the work. It would be like asking a surgeon why you don't think it makes sense for them to perform surgery on a patient when an AI robot can do it more quickly and accurately. I hope you get my point. 20 upper 22:10, 14 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
20 upper, indeed bots shouldn't be doing all the work and some more minor, wiki-gnomish tasks can just be done by a normal user on AWB or with other semi-automated editing tools. But when you say you are going to edit 29,874 pages (around 12% of our existing articles) to add a template, that is very much a bot task due to the scale of the task and because you say there are no factors in determining which pages it should be added to. There is no reason why a task of this scale and something so basic could not be done with a bot. Personally, I am not comfortable with granting AWB access for a task of that scale that would have no visual impact on the page on most of the pages. I think there should at least be a local consensus for this, if you do decide to go ahead with this. --Ferien (talk) 22:54, 14 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Ferien: I don't believe it has anything to do with personal preference, the template is underused and I want to fix that because I enjoy the activity, and I believe I have a response for every reply, so I'm assuming it has to do with the number of pages. Do you think the task's scope is too large and should be handled by a bot? Local consensus—since the template was released many years ago, I believe there is already local consensus. Perhaps I'm the issue, as the user below speculated. 20 upper 07:28, 15 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

┌─────────────────────────────────┘
I agree with the decline. Start small, earn trust, then you can request to make a major change. With near 30k pages affected, this is just too big of an ask for someone in your current standing. Operator873 connect 01:57, 15 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

TheresNoTime — AWB request for de-orphaning

change

I recently added a link to the find_link tool to Template:Orphan, and have been making some (manual) de-orphaning edits (e.g. Special:Diff/8949697) using it. I'd like to use AWB to remove the {{orphan}} tag from pages which aren't actually orphans (i.e. as I had to do manually here), namely to tidy up after myself. — TheresNoTime (talk • they/them) 15:50, 19 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

TheresNoTime, I am happy to give you AWB access to do that. I will note that a bot was approved to do the same task around half a year ago, Wikipedia talk:Bots#BattyBot, but it hasn't edited in 6 months or so. Please let me know when you are complete. If you are planning to make more than 100 changes, please let me (or another admin) know and the flood flag can be added. --Ferien (talk) 16:41, 19 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Ferien: Thanks   There's about 122 pages which will initially need edits, so the flood flag might be useful — TheresNoTime (talk • they/them) 17:01, 19 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
TheresNoTime, as you appear to have finished with that task, I've removed you from the AWB list. Feel free to let us know if you'll need it again. Thanks! --Ferien (talk) 19:08, 25 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Remove instances of Persondata

change

Template:Persondata has stopped being used since 2016 on English Wikipedia. All information is now in Wikidata. The template has been deleted or deprecated in almost all wikis. There are ~1,000 instances of the template on Simple Wikipedia. I checked (almost) all information and it turns it has been copied to Wikidata. I am requesting to delete the template for code simplifications. AWB will remove any support to Persondata to its next release too. Thanks. I can remove them even using my bot account to cause less distractions. Magioladitis (talk) 11:51, 5 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Magioladitis, seeing as you were doing it on this account before, I can approve it for your main account to get this done quicker (as doing it the bot way would involve going through WT:BOTS, with trials etc). I'll approve this, let me know when you get started again so I can add flood to your account. --Ferien (talk) 11:54, 5 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much. I can start right away. -- Magioladitis (talk) 12:04, 5 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Magioladitis, I've added flood, go for it :) --Ferien (talk) 12:07, 5 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
I am done! Thank you very much! -- Magioladitis (talk) 13:24, 5 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your help! --Ferien (talk) 13:56, 5 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Rename category per discussion

change

Hi! We recently had a discussion at Wikipedia:Simple talk/Archive 157#Category move. It's a lot of pages, and the only way I can see to make this change en masse is to use AWB - unless anyone knows of a bot or tool that can move category names on mass.

I'd like to request access to AWB to complete the task - I have experience with the tool, I've made a few thousand edits with it on the English language Wikipedia. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 23:26, 25 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Lee Vilenski   Done, I've also given you the flood flag which expires in 3 hours. Please let me know if you need the flag to be extended. — *Fehufangą✉ Talk page 23:47, 25 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, I hadn't planned to do the work immediately, I'm hoping to get some time to make some of the changes today. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 14:18, 26 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
