Northern Rail

change

Thanks for improving the article Northern Rail. I just thought I'd mention that this edit wasn't needed. A comma doesn't go there so I took it out. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions, and welcome to Simple English Wikipedia! --Auntof6 (talk) 21:03, 28 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

IRC cloak request

change

Hello Chip123456. You recently applied for a Wikimedia IRC cloak, but it looks like you forgot to register your nickname first. Could you please log on to IRC and do:

/msg NickServ REGISTER <password> <email>

where <password> is a password of your choice and <email> is your e-mail address? After you do that, please follow the instructions that are e-mailed to you to confirm your e-mail address. When you're done with that, I just need you to confirm your cloak request:

/msg MemoServ send wmfgc IRC cloak request

After you finish all of that, I'd be happy to get you a cloak. :-) If you have any questions, feel free to ask me on my meta talk page. --Dungodung (talk) 19:56, 30 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, we didn't seem to get that memo. Could you please send it again? Cheers --Dungodung (talk) 21:33, 1 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hi, I have done this again, but every time it says you are not logged in, I am! Well, we will see if it sends! If there's another problem, give me a nudge. Thanks.--Chip123456 TalkChanges 06:55, 2 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
There is still no memo, please poke me when you get on IRC. -Barras talk 15:03, 3 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
You've successfully sent the memo and are cloaked now. -Barras talk 23:58, 3 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

I read the semi-protection article.I also have the same impression as user:Barras. On the English Wikipedia it works and the reason is:(User request within own user space)

The article was disinformative and the references were dubious.

That is your view. Please discuss on the talk page.--Chip123456 TalkChanges 18:19, 21 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Revert 3 changes

change

How did you revert 3 changes at the same time?I tried to revert the changes user:Csaaccount made on Peanut, but i couldn't revert 3 at the same time.Receptie123 (talk) 17:35, 12 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

I used Twinkle. It's a tricky tool, so if you do install it, don't get carried away. For vandalism, I use rollback.--Chip123456 TalkChanges 17:39, 12 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

I have twinkle as well.What option did you use?Receptie123 (talk) 17:41, 12 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

The normal rollback in light blue.--Chip123456 TalkChanges 17:50, 12 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

British Ambassadors to Japan

change

I noticed that you have been working on Order of St Michael and St George and Royal Victorian Order. In this context, perhaps it makes sense to ask you to review two stub articles about former British Ambassadors to Japan:

I am a bit unsure about how to handle categories for recipients of British honours. --Horeki (talk) 01:43, 16 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Both of them would have received the GCMG, as they were both British ambassadors. What exactly is it in the article you'd like me to review! I know little about ambassadors (though a quick search would fix that), but if it's something to do with their honours, I'd be happy to assist! --Chip123456 TalkChanges 10:13, 16 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
On advice of the British government, Cortazzi was honoured three times by the Queen:
  • 1969 — Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG)
  • 1980 — Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG)
  • 1984 — Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George (GCMG)
As you may know, notice of each honour was printed in The London Gazette.
Does this mean that Cortazzi's name needs to be in each of these categories? Arguably, his name could be/should be only in the highest category of this Order? What is best in our SEWP context?
If I were to create an article about Japan's en:Order of the Rising Sun, it would be reasonable to add a list of select recipients. For example, that list would likely include en:William Elliot Griffis who was twice honoured in Japan
  • 1907 — Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, 4th class
  • 1926 — Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon, 3rd class
What lessons should we draw from the model established by Hugh Cortazzi and simple:Category:Order of St Michael and St George?
Do you see what I mean? Your investment of time improving articles in simple:Category:Orders, decorations, and medals of the United Kingdom recognized. This persuades me that your opinion on this subject is informed by research and thought.
Do you see how this discussion thread can become a practical foundation for what we do moving forward.--Horeki (talk) 15:08, 16 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
I appreciate the wiktionary link ups, but there's no need, I'm English. In regards to putting him in the highest honour category, it would fall under the last one (GCMG, usually 'G' denotes grand cross, the highest rank of that honour). I tend to agree that putting them in each category is not a good idea. This is because when you move up ranks in the honour, you lose the lower rank post-noms. For example, if I was awarded an MBE, I would have the post noms MBE (Chip123456 MBE). Then, if it was 'upgraded' to an OBE, the post-noms would change, making me Chip123456 OBE. With regards to cross honours, as in honours from different orders, they should be placed in both categories. For example, if I was made a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order, and then was given the honour of becoming a Knight Companion of the Garter, I would keep the noms 'KCVO' (and would still be part of that order), as well as the post-noms KG. The only difference would be that the KG would be placed in front of KCVO, as it is a higher honour. I would be part of both groups, as they are different orders. A well-known example for one to take of someone with different awards would be Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. see the letters after his name. He is part of many orders, but retains them all. It's really confusing, and as you do say, requires someone with knowledge in that area, as well as a lot if research. To cut a long answer short I agree that if you have received different ranks of the same order, you should be placed in the highest rank category, not all of them. If you have a higher honour, but in a different order, you should be placed in both. Hope this has helped, and I'm open to further discussion. Thanks :)--Chip123456 TalkChanges 17:19, 16 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yes, your analysis make good sense to me. I will follow the pattern suggested by your review. As a step in a constructive direction, for example, see here. Thank you. --Horeki (talk) 18:04, 19 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Minor changes

change

Hi Chip123456, I see you're making a lot of small grammar and spelling changes to some articles. When you do can you A. please mark them as minor edits and B. try to make them all in one or two edits rather than six or seven edits to the same article? Doing both these will help in recent changes patrolling for other users. Thanks, Only (talk) 12:42, 14 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Sure, no problem. --Chip123456 TalkChanges 12:45, 14 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
