Copyright law is interesting. For our purposes, with text, you can exactly copy a small amount of text into an article if it's cited. You can also copy anything if the end purpose is parody, but that's not an issue here really. Special:Contribs/186.251.245.0/24 keeps making hoaxes, some using real titles but completely false content. These include Nelvana Studios and Frenzy Entertainment. I have written a page on my history and work that I would like to go on line Wikepedia

I found a person on line who said he was a skilled and connected Wiki expert and could get my page on line. I paid him to do that. The page is now written to my satisfaction - but seems to be stalled in getting on line. The paid provider seems to have dropped out. Was I ripped off? I am 83 and have a long career, good reputation, many citations - more than some who are on line with Wiki pages. My computer skills have faded and I am pretty helpless reading your suggestions. Oakley Chan Hoi Kei issue

Oakley Chan Hoi Kei was repeatedly created and deleted, and now Hoi Kei Oakley Chan was created. I suspect this is the same as Oakley Chan, which was deleted at an RfD. It keeps being created by different IP addresses, so it's hard to track, but a lot of them are from this range: Special:Contributions/2404:7C80:64:A9C9::/64, so maybe that range should be blocked. Range blocks

Is there some rule that says if someone's requesting unblock for a range block, they have to email admins instead of using their talk page?

There is no rule like that that I am familiar with. The range in question is a /64 block which administrators, especially on enwiki, have been encouraged to use for a majority of IPv6 cases, because IPv6s can change frequently within a /64 range. w:en:WP:/64 explains this all perfectly. I don't think it'd be fair on IPv6 users to have to email the admins list for a majority of IPv6 blocks, when we are just trying to ensure a single user is blocked. --Ferien (talk) 18:30, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What to do?

Earlier I opened a deletion discussion for an Indian doctor, Anita Malik, which was deleted: Wikipedia:Requests for deletion/Requests/2024/Anita Malik. However, there is also an American politician with this name. When the article was deleted, a new article Anita Malik was created about the politician. However it is now being replaced with content about the doctor. I assume it was done this way to avoid detection. What should we do, restore the version about the politician, or delete it? I don't think either are notable. The politician in question has not held a political office and has only been a candidate in two United States congress elections for a district. Per w:en:WP:NPOL, Just being an elected local official, or an unelected candidate for political office, does not guarantee notability, although such people can still be notable if they meet the general notability guideline. I do not believe Malik passes GNG, but the election in question does. An ideal redirect would be to "2020 United States House of Representatives elections in Arizona", like enwiki have done, but we do not have that page here, so I have just redirected it to the national page for now. --Ferien (talk) 18:15, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I would like some comment from administrators about the many pages created by Symonds Gerother (talk · contribs). I would like to know whether they qualify as simple enough; and if not, some guidance should be provided to this user. I think they are not simple enough, not only in language but in things like section headings that are different here. In addition, at least some of them:
  • Are not categorized
  • Have reference errors
  • Are not formatted properly (for example, they use too much upper case in headings)
  • Have unlinked items in the see also section (which should be the related pages section)

These users are sysops on nowiki, Anne-Sophie is also sysop on nnwiki.

The last weeks we have all been targets of harassments from various IPs (same person) because the person’s IP was blocked on nowiki due to vandalism and harassment. The IPs have continued the harassment on nnwiki, svwiki, dawiki, enwiki and simple-enwiki. See en:WP:LONGTERM#Request for LTA listing for details.

Earlier today both mine and Znuddel’s user and user talk pages got a semi protection on enwiki, see en:User talk:1000mm.

@XXBlackburnXx, the IP address mentioned here posted on both my and Znuddel’s talk pages at dewiki, but it was deleted pretty quick. Then the IP was globally blocked by steward EPIC because of open proxy.
Other IP addresses used by the same person has been blocked for some days on most projects it has happened. Same IP has posted the exact same nonsense garbage that resulted in indefinite block on nowiki a while ago – this block being the reason he tries to take revenge over nowiki sysops elsewhere – on our talk pages in several wiki projects earlier this week.

Please protect Fascism

The article is constantly vandalized by history revisioners and pov pushers. It was vandalized 6 times in the last two days, and it's always the same kind of vandalism. Not only it gets vandalized that often, but it's one of the most read articles and it has serious real-life consequences. Request for admin review of COVID-19_pandemic_in_British_Columbia

Hello. I have just been looking through New Changes, without registered users showing up, and I've seen this article being edited by an IP address user. The talk page for the IP reveals that they have previously been blocked in relation to the article which they are creating, and it's been deleted at least once. The IP address is User:162.156.70.174, and it also shows their last block as being little more than a week ago. The user appears to be rewording the article, but still seems to be having competency issues with regard to references, layout and wording. I'm wondering if an admin would be kind enough to check the article to see that everything the author is doing, is acceptable within the standards for writing an article please? I did not say that the content is the same, but it still has the same issues that caused the user to be blocked before:
  • Despite the challenges, British Columbians showed resilience and care for each other
  • The holiday season was marked by pleas for caution...

  • Despite this, vaccination rates continued to rise, offering hope for a more stable future.
None of this is language that should be used on an encyclopedia.

@BZPN @Asteralee for all of the blacklist request above: Blacklisting is an extreme measure that should only be done if URLs to the website have been heavily abused. There's a reason why the English Wikipedia doesn't blacklist Fandom, Quora, or StackExchange. Additionally, the spam blacklist applies to all namespaces. Hi! Just here to let you guys know that I have removed few users who have been blocked/banned. Two of them haven't edited in years, and as far as I am aware, 12 months with no activity is considered inactive. If they can get unblocked and then demonstrate sufficient trust then it's not a difficult task to restore them. Hello Admins From past 1 month i am observing there are many People making paid pages on simple wikipedia. People who are not having any news article and having 2-3 paid article also getting live here. And Scammers are using fake references as well with fake references. And a user @Symonds Gerother is involved in it because today i inserted qd in 5-10 non notable pages and he revereted all the changes and removed qd. So he is also involved in the group of people who are making paid pages of non notable people so deleted all the pages on which i have inserted qd and which has been remove by @Symonds Gerother and Block this user.

He is blocked on other wikis for sockpuppetry, and such. But do you have solid evidence that he's a paid editor? I doubt he's making those, just non-notable doctors and entrepreneurs at most (We have a lot of those being created in this wiki). His page creations seem to be pretty normal, I suppose. A couple of the articles I've looked at are not good - poor sources at best, promotional in tone. Some of the articles where Symonds Gerother has removed a QD tag are 100% warranted though. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez? Democratic Party (United States)? Alia Bhat? Ranbir Kapoor? Give me a break - those are absolutely disruptive tags where SG was doing what any good faith editor should have done. When I observed a new user and a random IP address marking multiple articles for quick deletion in a short period, I assumed it could be potential vandalism. Symonds Gerother articles

Symonds Gerother was blocked a few days ago, and I've been going through some of the articles they've created and it's not pretty. There's a lot of unsourced and really over-the-top promotional fluff that you don't find in the enwiki version, so it's purely from SG's editing. Suhasini Maniratnam is a good example of this, here is all of the fluff I've removed from that article, when you look at w:Suhasini Maniratnam on enwiki, it didn't have any of the fluff. They have also used highly questionable sources in articles. On Shaik AllaBakashu, they included 9+ sources that are basically the same 2-3 paragraphs with slight rephrasing in all of them. [5], [6], [7] as examples. A bare minimum of checking would have started raising concerns in a good faith editor looking for sources.

I'm going through some of his articles, and nearly all of the India related articles have had problems. Some of them are for clearly notable people, but there's a lot of bad material and just bad articles. Any thoughts on the best approach to deal with this? I cannot assume good faith anymore with them and strongly suspect they have been an undeclared paid editor pushing articles on non-notable subjects here, while creating some good articles pulled from enwiki as cover.
